Luxor Hotel & Casino is a three-hotel-tower resort located on the famous Las Vegas Strip, known for its striking architecture and rich history since 1993. The property is owned by MGM Resorts International and has undergone several renovations to maintain its status as one of the top entertainment venues in the world.
Architecture and Design
Luxor Hotel & Casino was designed by Jordan Marani Architects and built by Perini Construction Company, with a total construction cost Luxor Hotel & (Las Vegas) of approximately $300 million at that time. The resort’s pyramid-shaped architecture is an iconic representation of ancient Egyptian design, inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The pyramidal structure has seven levels, with a central atrium featuring a 70-foot-tall sphinx statue made from fiberglass and steel. Each tower serves a specific purpose: Luxor East Tower houses rooms and suites, while the more recent addition, the Excalibur Hotel (which is connected to the main hotel) primarily accommodates rooms.
Facilities and Amenities
Luxor offers over 4,400 luxurious guestrooms and suites across its three towers. The interior design reflects ancient Egyptian artistry with elements like frescoes depicting pharaohs, gold-leaf furniture, and rich tapestries. Guests can choose from a variety of accommodations to suit their needs, ranging from rooms in the pyramid-shaped tower (starting at approximately $30) up to opulent suites that can cost upwards of thousands per night.
The Luxor Hotel & Casino offers an array of dining options within its premises. The property features several restaurants that provide everything from casual to fine dining experiences. One notable feature is the Rainforest Cafe, a themed restaurant known for its elaborate animatronic displays and tropical jungle environment. Other attractions include live entertainment venues like Legends in Concert, as well as numerous bars and lounges.
Casino Services
The Luxor’s casino covers over 120,000 square feet of gaming floor space. It boasts an extensive range of table games such as Blackjack, Roulette (including a unique zero-skip American-style wheel) Baccarat, Craps, Let It Ride, Pai Gow Poker, and others. For slot players, the resort is equipped with approximately 2,150 slots, featuring popular themes like progressive jackpots to classic reel machines.
Shopping Options
The Luxor has an adjacent Promenade area known as Mandalay Bay’s Shoppes at Mandalay Place, which features upscale boutiques for high-end retail. The mall also connects the Luxor with its neighbor, Excalibur Hotel & Casino, making shopping convenient between these resorts without crossing Las Vegas Boulevard.
Transportation and Accessibility
Luxor is conveniently located just south of McCarran International Airport on Interstate 15. Visitors can take public transportation via the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) Bus or opt for one-way rideshare services from their airport terminal to the hotel. Additionally, Luxor offers shuttle services for guests staying at other MGM Resorts properties along the Las Vegas Strip.
Responsible Gaming
Like many resorts in Nevada, Luxor Hotel & Casino recognizes the risks associated with excessive gaming behavior and the importance of responsible gambling practices. Therefore, it promotes a safe gambling environment by setting limits on betting, offering self-exclusion options for problem gamblers, providing resources to cope with addiction issues (including partnerships with organizations like the National Council on Problem Gambling), and enforcing age restrictions.
History
Built in 1993 as one part of a massive resort development project called “The Strip,” it took two years of construction work to complete. With its initial $300 million investment, this colossal building stood tall alongside the famous Excalibur Castle, also an MGM Resorts International property located right next door. Over time, Luxor expanded with additional hotel towers and upgrades in recent years have focused on modernizing guest rooms.
Accolades
Throughout its history, Luxor has earned numerous awards for hospitality service standards, innovation in resort design, entertainment options offered to guests, as well as environmental stewardship efforts like reducing water consumption through the installation of energy-efficient fixtures.
